5 Important Tips For Anyone Living With Coeliac Disease:
As it is #CoeliacUKAwarenessWeek I thought I would share some tips we have picked up over the last 12 months since my Daughter was diagnosed with the disease. Sometimes you do not think of everything straight away and here are a few things we found out along the way:
5 Important Tips For Anyone Living With Coeliac Disease:
Don’t Double Dip The Butter Knife Into The Butter Dish:
With a family, especially a large one like up it is easy to be in a rush when making lunch boxes up.
I make my Daughters gluten free sandwiches up first and always have plenty of butter knifes ready for buttering and cutting up everyone else’s sandwiches.
You can not always gage how much butter you need and if you cut some sandwiches and then butter some more you are contaminating the butter for next time.
I butter, cut and pop the knife into the sink after every sandwich. If I do not have enough butter for a sandwich, I simply use another knife to dip into the butter.
Have Separate Baking Trays:
Keep a few different baking tray for cooking any food on that does not contain gluten.
You do not want any slight bit of food sticking to the tray that has gluten on for the next time you need to cook non gluten food.
If I do need to cook something like a joint of meat on something that could have had gluten on I make sure tin foil goes down first.
Have Different Toaster:
Toasters contain loads of bread crumbs. So many cumbs and so much contamination.
Never use a toaster that has had gluten bread in.
We went straight out and brought a new toaster.
Just for my Daughter to use.
Always Prepare A Lunch Box On Days Out:
When my Daughter goes out for the day, to friends, day trips and parties, she always makes up and takes out her own food.
She might be able to pick food up when out which is a bonus but may a time gluten free meal deals have sold out or places she goes to with her friends to eat do not always cater for her.
I always tell her to take a gluten free treat when something special is going on at school too.
It was horrible for her when the teacher handed out cakes and laughed at her saying who these are yummy, look what your missing out on!! Then he made her sit in a classroom full of children all eating cake but her.
Awful man, I am so glad he left!!
Plan Ahead And Stock Up On Essentials:
Making meals that are gluten free takes much more though and you can not just nip to the local shop for some bread or pasta for meal times.
Always plan ahead and stock up on gluten free essentials.

Thanks Alexandra. I will have to go and check her blog out 🙂
This is a very valuable post for those who may not also be parenting a child with coeliac disease but also for those of us who may have someone visiting our home with the same condition. I was forced to think about this recently when we hosted parents from my daughter’s school and the mother is a sufferer. Hadn’t thought about the butter knife! Thanks for sharing. #PoCoLo
