My Make-Up Routine: Over 40 Style!

I love to wear make up every now and then. I love to experiment with different looks.

Also, I think makeup can completely change how you feel about yourself, give you more confidences and change how you look too.

Today, I thought I would share something a little different from my usual fashion posts. We’re talking beauty, make-up and all those little things that help us feel good about ourselves.

So, today’s post is all about My Make-Up Routine: Over 40 Style!

As someone who loves fashion, experimenting with different looks and adding a little colour to everyday life, I also enjoy having a play with make-up.

I think it’s lovely to make a little time for yourself, whether that’s getting ready for a day out, taking photographs for the blog, meeting friends for afternoon tea or simply popping to the shops.

And let’s be honest, sometimes putting a little make-up on can make you feel ready to take on the world!

My Make-Up Routine: Over 40 Style!

Beauty Over 40. I believe beauty has no age limit. Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s or beyond, make-up should be about having fun, expressing yourself and enhancing the features you already love.

There are no strict rules about what we should or shouldn’t wear as we get older. I certainly don’t believe we need to stop experimenting with colour or trying new beauty trends!

My approach is to keep things fresh, natural-looking and comfortable, while adding a little extra glamour when the occasion calls for it.

Here are some of the steps I would include in my everyday make-up routine. It also cheers me up when I am feeling sorry for myself and gives me a touch of sparkle.

I do not wear makeup every day as some days I don’t leave the house for too long, just walkies with Mollie and I am not getting dressed up to go for a walk in the wood.

I remember a few years ago; one of my son’s friends said to him that he saw his Dad with another woman walking into town.

He had seen us a few days earlier going on a rare date night and because I was dressed up with makeup on and he had no idea it was me!!

Someone Could Have Been In So Much Trouble!

Haha, that could have got the hubby into so much trouble!!

I have always loved experimenting with different makeup. I can still remember growing up and sharing makeup tips and tricks with my best friend.

She had a part-time job than when she was around 13 and she uses to buy all different things for us to try out and experiment with.

The amount of Sun-In bleach hair dye, hair remover and hairspray we must have got through in those days!!

I use to have dark hair on my arms those days too and she completely took all them off just one of my arms using some kind of hair remover.

Leaving a big patch on my arms. The good old days eh!?

Although I have never had the spare money for the best makeup in town, I have had some decent things that do not always cost too much but still do the job perfectly.

I get some great bargains from Primark, Body Care and my new favourite place The Beauty Outlet in McArthur Glen outlet.

Start With Skincare:

Before reaching for my make-up, I like the idea of starting with a good skincare routine.

A moisturised base can help make-up sit more comfortably on the skin, so I always think it’s worth taking a little time to look after your skin.

As our skin changes over the years, finding products that suit how it feels now is more important than sticking to the same routine forever.

My go-to morning moisturiser at the minute is Kiehl’s ultra face cream as it feels lovely on. I also use it at night too, when I remember!

I also wouldn’t forget SPF during the daytime. It’s an important part of looking after our skin.

A Light Base For A Fresh Look.

When it comes to foundation, I prefer the idea of a fresh, comfortable-looking finish rather than anything too heavy.

A lightweight foundation, tinted moisturiser or BB cream can be lovely for everyday wear. The trick is finding a shade that blends naturally with your skin.

I think a little coverage where you need it can be more flattering than applying lots of product everywhere.

Of course, everyone has different preferences, and the best foundation is the one that makes you feel happy and confident.

I mostly us Rimmel at the minute as my son bought me a few bottles for Christmas as his girlfriend uses this brand. It works well and has a lovely finish to it. I think I might change it up a bit in my 50’s though.

Concealer To Brighten Things Up:

A little concealer can be useful when you want to brighten the under-eye area or cover any small areas that need extra attention.

I would apply it sparingly and blend gently.

There’s no need to cover every little line or mark. Our faces tell our stories, and I think there’s something rather lovely about that!

Cheeks And Face:

One of my favourite things to use every day or evenings out on my cheeks and face is this proto-col Baked Mineral Shimmer.

It adds a touch of shimmer and sparkle without going overboard. I first brush it onto my cheeks then once most is off the brush I dab a bit onto my forehead and around my face. A perfect natural looking sparkle.

One of my favourite make-up ideas is adding a little colour to the cheeks. A soft pink, peach or rosy shade can give the face a fresh-looking finish.

Cream blush is also worth trying if you prefer a more dewy appearance. I love the idea of having a little colour in my make-up, just as I do in my wardrobe. After all, why should colourful fashion have all the fun?

Eye Shadow:

Now, onto the eyes! I love the idea of keeping everyday eyeshadow simple with soft neutrals, warm browns, taupes or champagne shades.

These colours are lovely for creating an easy daytime look. If I’m dressing up for an evening out, I might fancy something a little more glamorous.

I keep buying this Technic eyeshadow time and time again from Body Care as it last for ages, wears well and I am sure it only cost just around a pound or 2.Cheap and such cheerful colours.

Mascara:

Mascara:

A coat or two of mascara can help define the lashes and finish the look. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll know that getting ready can be half the fun!

Although I love Primark’s make up I find the mascara is harder to get off at night so I find this Rimmel one a lot easier to remove. This one has a sweetly curved brush too to help you get rocking curves!!

Brow Pencils: Primark again, such a bargain from here and I don’t think an expensive one would make much difference!?

A Pop Of Lip Colour:

I couldn’t finish my make-up routine without talking about lipstick! A lovely lip colour can really finish an outfit.

For everyday wear, soft pinks, rosy nudes and peachy shades are beautiful options.

For something a little more glamorous, I love the idea of a classic red lipstick. There is something timeless about red lipstick, isn’t there?

I remember sharing outfits on the blog where a little red lipstick was just the finishing touch. Sometimes it’s the smallest detail that makes you feel dressed up.

I love L’Oreal Glam Shine lip gloss. This pink one has just a hint of colour and lots of shine, so perfect throughout the day. For night time I would usually go for bright red lipstick and sometimes pop this on top for a nice red shine to it.

The There Is The Perfume:

Daisy is my everyday go-to perfume at the minute for daytime as it smells lovely without being overpowering. I love this sweet little bottle on my dressing table too, how cute!?

I need to try the other smells in the range now for a change. But my favourite night time perfume is still Lou Lou after 30 years!!

Trends change more quickly than the seasons, in a world where new fragrances are introduced all the time.

Over on social media, lots of my favourite influencers announce a “new favourite,”all the time and some bottles become popular overnight, as social media is always showing us to the newest essential scent.

However, true luxury isn’t always about the newest.

For me, it is what smells bring back fond memories is what matters.

I am always looking in Primark at their Make up bags. I usually pick a new one up from here, when I need one. They usually have some lovely designs and are a great price.
