I love finding different ways to wear the clothes already hanging in my wardrobe.
There is something lovely about getting a little more wear out of a favourite summer dress, especially when the British weather can’t quite decide what season it wants to be!
One minute we’re enjoying a little sunshine, and the next we’re reaching for our cosy cardigans. So rather than putting my gingham dress away until next summer, I decided to give it an autumn update.
Gingham is such a timeless print, isn’t it? It always makes me think of picnics, sunny days and lovely summer afternoons.
But I think it works beautifully for autumn too, especially when you add some cosy layers.

Adding A Little Christmas Cheer With A Festive Cardigan:

Now, onto the cardigan! I know Christmas knitwear might seem a little early to some, but I’m always happy to bring out a festive jumper or cardigan.
Why save all the fun for December? I brought this cardigan earlier this week from Next and could not wait to wear it.
A Christmas cardigan is such an easy way to add a little personality to an everyday outfit.
I love how it changes the whole feel of the gingham dress. Instead of looking like I’m heading off to a summer picnic, the outfit suddenly feels much more seasonal.
It’s also a lovely way to mix patterns, textures and colours. You don’t always have to stick to matching pieces. Sometimes the most unexpected combinations make the nicest outfits.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ll love finding new ways to style your favourite clothes rather than buying something completely new every season.
This cardigan is so warm too. I have had to take it off in the house.

Chunky Mary Jane Shoes: The Perfect Finishing Touch!
Can we talk about these shoes for a moment? I absolutely love chunky Mary Jane shoes! They have that lovely vintage-inspired feel, but with a modern twist thanks to the chunky soles.
They are such a fun alternative to trainers or ankle boots and look fabulous with dresses. I think they work particularly well with gingham because they add a little retro charm to the outfit.
The chunky shape also balances out the pretty, feminine feel of the summer dress. Mary Jane shoes are definitely one of those styles that make me smile. Fashion should be fun, after all!
And who says we have to stop wearing playful shoes as we get older? I certainly don’t!

How To Wear Summer Dresses In Autumn:
If you have a wardrobe full of summer dresses that you aren’t quite ready to put away, here are a few easy ways to make them work for autumn.
Firstly, Add A Cosy Cardigan.
A cardigan is probably the easiest way to transition a summer dress into autumn. Choose a chunky knit, a festive cardigan or a classic neutral shade.
Secondly, Wear Tights.
When the temperature drops, add a pair of black opaque tights. They instantly make a summer dress feel more autumn-ready.
Thirdly, Experiment With Your Shoes.
Swap summer sandals for chunky Mary Janes, ankle boots or knee-high boots.
Fourthly, Layer Up.
A denim jacket, leather-look jacket or cosy coat can make all the difference on colder days.
Fifth, Have Fun With Accessories.
Add a scarf, handbag or statement jewellery to give your outfit a fresh seasonal feel.
The best thing about transitional dressing is that you can experiment with pieces you already own.

Why I Love Mixing Summer And Winter Fashion.
One of my favourite things about fashion is that there really are no strict rules. I love mixing different seasons together and finding unexpected combinations.
A summer dress with a Christmas cardigan might not be the first outfit you think of, but I think that’s what makes it interesting.
It’s also a great way to make your wardrobe work harder. Instead of putting everything away at the end of summer, have a little look through your wardrobe and see what you can restyle.
You might be surprised at how many different outfits you can create. And if you love wearing dresses all year round, this is such an easy way to keep doing it.
Are you someone who likes to get the Christmas clothes out early, or do you wait until December before embracing all things festive?
I think a little Christmas sparkle can brighten up any autumn day!
I’d also love to know if you keep wearing your summer dresses throughout autumn or whether you prefer to pack them away until the warmer weather returns.
Thank you so much for stopping by today.
I hope I’ve inspired you to have a little play around with your wardrobe and perhaps give one of your favourite summer dresses a new lease of life.
