How delicious!? There’s nothing quite like the cosy comfort of a homemade crumble cake, and this Lovely Plum Crumble Cake is the perfect treat to showcase the sweet, tangy flavour of ripe plums.

If you’re searching for an easy plum cake recipe that’s moist, fruity, and has a buttery crumble, you’ve come to the right place.

This bake combines the best of two worlds, a soft, tender cake base and a golden, crunchy topping that melts into the juicy plums as it bakes.

Laetitia’s Lovely Plum Crumble Cake:

Lovely Plum Crumble Cake. This delicious creation can be served hot as a pudding, or cold as a cake.

It’s made with a mixture of rolled oats, wholemeal self-raising flour, melted butter and muscovado sugar, layered with South African Laetitia plums.

The layers are repeated so that there’s a lovely colourful topping of fruit. It’s divine served with crème fraiche, cream, ice cream or thick Greek yogurt.

Plums are one of those underrated fruits that truly shine in desserts.

Their natural sweetness and slight tartness pair beautifully with warm spices and buttery textures, making them ideal for cakes, crumbles, and everything in between.

This plum crumble cake recipe is great for weekend baking, afternoon tea, or serving warm with cream or custard for a simple yet memorable dessert.

In today’s post, I’ll be sharing a recipe to try, to see why this cake so special, the ingredients you’ll need, and tips to help your crumble topping turn out perfectly crisp.

Whether you have a bowl of overripe plums to use up or you simply love fruit-filled bakes, this Lovely Plum Crumble Cake is sure to become a new favourite. Let’s get baking!

Laetitia’s Lovely Plum Crumble Cake:

Preparation: 20 minutes | Cooking: 40 minutes | Serves: 8-10

Suitable for freezing | Suitable for vegetarians.

Ingredients:

  • 250g rolled oats
  • 150g light muscovado sugar, plus 1 tbsp
  • 250g wholemeal self-raising flour
  • 1tsp ground mixed spice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 250g butter
  • 500g South African Laetitia (red) plums, halved and pitted
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Crème fraiche, cream, ice cream or Greek yogurt, to serve

How To Make:

  1. Firstly, preheat the oven to 180°C, fan oven 160°C, Gas Mark 4. Grease and line a 20cm (8 inch) loose-based cake tin.
  2. Mix together the rolled oats, sugar (reserving 1 tablespoon), flour, spice and salt. Melt the butter over a low heat and stir into the dry ingredients. 
  3. Tip half the mixture into the prepared cake tin. Press down lightly.
  4. Mix the plums and lemon juice together and arrange about two-thirds in the cake tin. Sprinkle the remaining cake mixture on top and press down lightly. 
  5. Scatter the rest of the plums on top, and sprinkle with the reserved tablespoon of sugar.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes until firm and golden brown. Cool for about 20-30 minutes, then remove from the tin.  Carefully remove the lining paper. 
  7. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche, cream, ice cream or Greek yogurt.
  8. Last but not least, enjoy.

Cook’s Tip:

Look out for South African Songold (yellow) and Flavorking plums (purple) too – they would work well in this recipe too.
